Why trust Saint Joseph? 🌿

I write a lot about trust, especially about St. Faustina, because she is for me the image of trust.

But why Saint Joseph? Hmmm… maybe because when I started to get to know him and ask for his intercession, he never let me down.

“My child, true fidelity and love can only be shown in extreme conditions - and also developed, strengthened and enriched. What is precious is what is gained through effort and pain.”

These are the words of the Lord Jesus to Alicja Lenczewska from The Word of Instruction.

I think they are a perfect foundation for the invitation in the title - Trust Saint Joseph!

I remember one particular spring morning several years ago. I was living in Canada at the time, working, and for a long time I had been struggling with a problem I simply could not solve. Savouring my favourite coffee, I was scrolling through my phone and looking for the help of the Holy Spirit… Ha ha… I know…

And I found a 9-day novena. To the invocation of one of the days, I added my own intention and repeated it for nine days. Already on the third day, “the problem started solving itself!” And then I thought I had to write down that sequence and return to it. It was simple, perfect for a mind with ADHD - although at the time I had no idea that this also concerned me!

Since then - from my personal event - the idea for this novena was born. A little different, though, but when you trust and believe, and you are in extreme conditions, the Holy Spirit will lead you on your own unique path of trust. Saint Joseph is here as the intermediary and the guide. Trust Saint Joseph and allow him to act in your life.

Saint Joseph in the Bible - Master of Silence 🌿

In the Bible, Joseph is presented as a carpenter, a father, the guardian of Jesus and Mary, a man of the heart. He remains silent in the Gospel. Yet his decisions - courageous, full of trust - show true fidelity and love in extreme conditions.

When he learned of Mary’s pregnancy, he fell into panic and he did not know what to do, but he acted according to true love. Remember, those were different times and a different culture. It is hard to imagine what thoughts were going through his mind.

Whom could he ask for advice? Who could tell him: “Be of good cheer, everything will be all right”? Did that situation make any sense? What richness could it carry within itself? Joseph consciously gave up secondary things to remain with what filled and nourished him - with what? With God’s wisdom and radical trust.

“Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.”

When the angel told him to take the Mother and the Child and flee to Egypt, he asked no questions. He trusted and was obedient – obedient to the Voice of God who spoke to him in a unique way. Why? Because “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” Joseph had the courage to become “poor in spirit” next to Mary - in extreme conditions, in hardship and pain, he was able to listen to the Voice from the Depth and follow It. He overcame human weaknesses with a pure heart that lived the Truth of God’s revelation.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

How can we do this now, in our everyday life? Saint Joseph will certainly point the way. Through the centuries, the Church has discovered his greatness and the power of his intercession. Joseph trusted God in the midst of the greatest uncertainties - and that is precisely what makes him so close to us.

Man of a Pure Heart 🌿Silent guardian of many matters

His purity is not only physical - it is purity of intention, of feelings, of relationships. Joseph teaches simplicity and truth. He is a model not only for men, but for everyone who wants to live fully - without masks, without pretence.

But what actually is purity of heart today - in an age of overstimulation and distrust toward deep bonds?

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

Purity is the attitude of a heart that does not manipulate, does not use another person, does not lie, and does not scatter itself on what is superficial.

It is an inner freedom that allows one to love truly - without fear, without games, without the need to prove anything. It is the ability to look at another person with respect, and not through the prism of desires or comparisons.

In love and friendship, purity means authenticity. It is the question: do I love you for you, or for myself? Am I with you because I truly see you, or only because you fill my loneliness?

Saint Joseph was able to be close to Mary without crossing the boundaries that God had set. That is the courage of a heart that can say: “I love you so much that I do not want to hurt you or possess you.”

Joseph - the Father Who Protects 🌿

Fr. Pawlukiewicz used to speak with humour about male bodyguards who somehow disappeared in this century, and the roles were reversed. For those who did not have a good father, for those who were wounded, for those who are afraid of the future, Joseph becomes the icon of a fatherhood that does not abandon. He will hold you close to his heart and protect what is fragile. You can entrust to him your children, your home, your fears, your work… He is still very real and powerful.

Powerful Patron in Life’s Difficulties 🌿

Saint Teresa of Ávila wrote in her Life (chapter 6) that she never remembered asking Saint Joseph for anything that she did not receive. And she added a strong statement: “I do not know a person who has truly devoted himself to his special veneration and has not advanced in virtue.” Teresa was not speaking about a general devotion, but about a concrete experience of answers to requests concerning material matters, health, and the difficulties of life.

The same was later confirmed by, among others, Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and Saint Józef Sebastian Pelczar. Many people around the world also speak of this. This is only a small sample of Saint Joseph’s interventions. Since you are here, you probably have your own testimony as well. Share it in the comments. It may be an inspiration for someone who is in a similar situation. May Saint Joseph give you courage.

💬 “I prayed to Saint Joseph for a job and within a week I received an offer exactly like the one I had asked for.”

💬 “When our house was threatened by a mortgage debt, we began a novena to Saint Joseph. Everything calmed down.”

💬 “After years of prayer, I entrusted my children to him. Today they have returned to the Church.”

These are authentic fruits of prayer. Joseph acts in hiding, like a bodyguard who watches and steps in when needed.

The older I get, the more I understand why Mary felt safe and at peace with him as the head of their family.

🤍 My Novena with Saint Joseph: The Battle for Purity of Heart

7 days / 7 weeks – as you prefer, as you need – for each spiritual encounter.

The Ancient Prayer to Saint Joseph as the foundation of the novena in spiritual battle.

🌿Each day recite the ancient prayer to Saint Joseph, offering it in the intention of the struggle against a specific sin. Trust Saint Joseph, and he will take care of your matters.

You may add your own personal request for that day - it will beautifully enter into your life. Trust Saint Joseph! Really, trust.

“To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our affliction, and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse, we confidently invoke your patronage also. Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by His Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities. Amen.”

To be recited with each spiritual meditation: Each time, begin with an invocation to the Holy Spirit for the light of truth and discernment:

🤍 PRAYER FOR THE OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Spirit of Christ, move me; Spirit of Christ, lift me up; Spirit of Christ, fill me; Spirit of Christ, seal me. Sanctify in me Your Heart and Will, heavenly Father. Create in me a fountain of virtues. Seal my soul as Your own possession, so that Your reflection in me may be a visible light for all. Amen.

Day 1 - From Pride to Humility

🌿 Intention: For humility and the truth about oneself (1 Pet 5:5)

“God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

💕 Shadow integration:

Pride often covers the fear of powerlessness and the feeling of imperfection. By integrating the shadow of pride, we learn humility: we accept our limitations, learn cooperation and openness toward others. This allows us to grow in an authentic relationship with God and people, recognizing that everything we have is grace.

Pride is the root of many of our spiritual wounds - it is the conviction that we know better, that we need no one, not even God.

Yet Saint Joseph was quiet, unremarkable in the eyes of people, but obedient to God and truly great in His eyes.

📿 Meditation:

Ask for the grace to accept the truth about yourself – without diminishing your goodness, yet without escaping into illusions. Edith Stein wrote that humility is truth. It means an honest look at oneself: recognizing both one’s own weakness and dependence on God, as well as the gifts one has truly received. Do not undervalue what is good in you, and do not build a false image of yourself - only then can the truth set you free.

🙏 Personal prayer:

Saint Joseph, I thank you that in silence and simplicity, you showed me how true greatness is born of humility. I praise God, our Abba, for your pure heart that never sought its own glory, yet shines for us. I ask you, teach me the same humility as freedom that allows me to love and to trust.

Day 2 - From Greed to Generosity

🌿 Intention: For generosity of heart and freedom from attachment (Mt 6:24)

“You cannot serve God and mammon.”

💕 Shadow integration:

Greed can mask a deep fear of lack, of being insufficient or deprived of love. Integration consists in learning to trust Divine Providence and to share what we have. In this way we develop generosity and compassion.

Greed does not always concern money. Sometimes we cling too tightly to control, to people, to opinions.

Joseph was able to leave everything - his plans, his trade, his country - and walk the way of God.

📿 Meditation:

Am I ready to give to God what I am clinging to so tightly? Saint Teresa of Ávila taught that true detachment consists in uniting one’s whole soul only with the Creator and regarding all created things as nothing. As long as we cling tightly to anything, the heart is not free to receive God fully.

🙏 Personal prayer:

Saint Joseph, I thank you for the generosity with which you surrendered everything to God - plans, security and your own will. I praise God for your heart that did not count the cost but trusted His Providence. I ask you, teach me the same generosity that keeps nothing for itself but gives everything with trust.

Day 3 - From Impurity to Purity of Heart

🌿 Intention: For purity of heart and mind (1 Cor 6:19)

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit?”

💕 Shadow integration:

Impurity is often linked to a longing for closeness and acceptance that has been distorted or lost. Integration consists in discovering the true value of one’s body and learning that love is a gift of self, not merely pleasure. Transforming this energy allows us to build healthy relationships based on respect.

Purity is not only a matter of the body, but above all of the heart. It is an attitude of respect toward oneself, others and God.

Joseph was a just man who knew how to love purely and deeply.

📿 Meditation:

Ask for freedom from addictions, obsessions and fears that shatter your heart.Saint Faustina records in her Diary that Jesus granted her the grace of purity when for many years she had asked the Blessed Virgin Mary for it. From that moment she no longer experienced attacks against this virtue, either in her heart or in her mind. Faustina teaches us that freedom from what breaks the heart does not come from the strength of will alone, but from trusting surrender to Jesus and Mary.

🙏 Personal prayer:

Saint Joseph, I thank you for the pure and mature love with which you surrounded Mary and Jesus. I praise God for your heart that knew how to love without possessing and without wounding. I ask you, protect my dignity and teach me a love that is pure, free and mature.

Day 4 – From Envy to Gratitude

🌿 Intention: For joy in the good of others and gratitude (1 Cor 13:4)

“Love is not envious or boastful.”

💕 Shadow integration:

Envy points to a feeling that we are not enough or that something is not due to us. Integration consists in learning gratitude for our own gifts and rejoicing in the successes of others. This heals the heart and frees it from comparisons.

Envy is born when we forget our own gifts.

Saint Joseph competed with no one - his joy was to do the will of God and to protect the family.

📿 Meditation:

Today give thanks for what you have. Rejoice in the good of another person – it is also part of God’s plan.

Envy is born when we forget our own gifts. Alicja Lenczewska heard from Jesus: “There is no comparison among people. Each one has the proper time for himself, the proper conditions for sanctification. Therefore the paths are different and one cannot envy another his path, his experiences or graces. Everyone receives what is most suitable and best for him.”

🙏 Personal prayer:

Saint Joseph, I thank you for the peace with which you filled the Holy Family even in the greatest uncertainties. I praise God for your heart full of gratitude that never compared itself with anyone. I ask you, teach me the same gratitude and peace that are born of trust in God’s gifts.

Day 5 - From Gluttony to Temperance

🌿 Intention:

For harmony, balance and healthy moderation (Prov 23:20)

“Do not be among those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat.”

💕 Shadow integration:

Intemperance often serves as an escape from difficult emotions or spiritual emptiness. Integration consists in discovering deep satisfaction in moderation, in cultivating mindfulness and thanksgiving. In this way, eating and drinking become an occasion to celebrate God’s gifts rather than to abuse them.

Gluttony concerns not only food, but also greed for emotions, attention and pleasures.

Joseph lived simply yet deeply. He knew that less can mean more.

📿 Meditation:

Where do I seek to fill the emptiness? Do I allow God to feed my heart?

Saint Hildegard of Bingen taught that moderation (discretio) is the virtue above all virtues. Excess - whether in food, sleep, emotions or pleasures - throws a person out of balance and weakens both body and spirit. A wise person keeps measure in everything, for only then remains free and able to hear God.

🙏 Personal prayer:

Saint Joseph, I thank you for the simplicity with which you lived in Nazareth - without excess and without pretension. I praise God for your heart that knew how to choose what is truly important and leave the rest. I ask you, help me renounce the excess that hides what is essential, and teach me to live in the freedom of moderation.

Day 6 - From Anger to Gentleness

🌿 Intention: For gentleness, patience and forgiveness (Eph 4:26)

“Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger.”

💕 Shadow integration:

Anger is often a reaction to wounding or a sense of injustice. Integration consists in recognizing where the anger comes from and expressing it constructively – as a defence of boundaries and a desire to repair relationships, not as destruction.

Anger is often the result of wounds and fear.

Saint Joseph had many reasons for frustration - yet we find not a single word of anger from him in the Gospel.

📿 Meditation:

Am I ready to forgive – even myself? Can I quiet my heart in moments of storm?

Blessed Beatrice of Nazareth, in the Seven Manners of Holy Love, describes how God’s love gradually calms the soul. In the sixth manner, the soul reaches a state in which love triumphs and peace reigns within it. It no longer fears anything or anyone - it works and rests in gentleness, because it knows it is being led. Gentleness is not weakness, but strength rooted in the divine love that has taken possession of the heart.

🙏 Personal prayer:

Saint Joseph, I thank you for the gentleness with which you protected Mary and Jesus even in the greatest danger. I praise God for your heart that never erupted in anger but acted with strength rooted in trust. I ask you, teach me the same gentleness that comes from God.

Day 7 - From Laziness (Acedia) to Zeal

🌿 Intention: For zeal, perseverance and fortitude (Lk 16:10)

“Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much.”

💕 Shadow integration:

Laziness is often a lack of meaning or an avoidance of confrontation with one’s own vocation. Integration consists in finding a deep purpose and meaning in daily duties and learning perseverance. This is the path to inner peace and fulfilment.

Acedia is spiritual discouragement that makes us want nothing - not even to pray.

Yet Joseph acted, searched, went, protected.

📿 Meditation:

Ask today for a fresh fire of faith. Ask that your life may have meaning even in the smallest actions.

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux taught that holiness does not consist in great deeds, but in performing the most ordinary duties with great love. In moments of dryness and discouragement (which today we call acedia) she did not seek extraordinary consolations, but remained faithful in little things – precisely because she loved. She said that even picking up a pin out of love can save a soul. Little things done with love become great in the eyes of God.

🙏 Personal prayer:

Saint Joseph, I thank you for your fidelity in the daily, hidden duties of Nazareth. I praise God for your heart that did not seek easy paths or human recognition, but acted with love to the end. I ask you, teach me the same zeal - that I may not grow discouraged and may know how to love even in what is small and ordinary.

🌿🌿🌿

Illustration of Joseph, Mary, and child on a sunlit hillside at sunset, with lantern; text reads Trust in St. Joseph.

💕 Trust Saint Joseph - he truly leads. In a world that is increasingly losing silence and inner purity, Saint Joseph becomes like a lighthouse - quiet, yet reliable. He did not speak many words, but his life was full of trust. His care is real and powerful.

Does Saint Joseph answer?

Yes.

Perhaps not in the way you expect. But his answers are authentic. In the peace of the heart, in the lights of the Spirit, in situations that suddenly begin to fall into place. He truly cares for your heart, your family, your path.

Do not be afraid to entrust him with your future. Take the first step today. With a heart full of trust, recite the ancient prayer, the prayer to the Holy Spirit, the meditation and your own prayer, or just sigh toward God and allow it to work. Trust Saint Joseph - he truly leads.

“Do not be afraid to entrust yourselves to Joseph. He knows how to lead a soul to Jesus effectively.”

Below is another traditional prayer of the Church for the intercession of Saint Joseph.

Suspirations are deep sighs of the heart directed toward God - expressions of longing, love, desire, prayer, or yearning for God. The word comes from Latin suspirare, “to sigh.”

In Christian spirituality, a suspiration can be something very short, such as:

Novena with St. Joseph

Today’s Theme: ......................................

How do I feel this sin or “shadow area” within me today?

What do I notice in my thoughts, emotions, or reactions?

What am I holding onto too tightly?

What am I afraid of? What am I lacking? What am I trying to control or take care of on my own?

What touched me most in today’s reflection?

What moved my heart, surprised me, or perhaps awakened some resistance?

What does St. Joseph want to say to me today?

If I became still and allowed him to be present with me, what might I hear?

One small thing I will do today out of love and trust:

I don't have to change everything. What is one concrete step I can take today?

Today I am grateful for:.......................................................................................

One sentence I am taking with me today:
